Dominica is a beautiful island - lush and green with rainforests in the hills. It has hot springs, including a "Boiling Lake" which is said to be the second largest in the world. There are also dive sites where hot water bubbles up from the sea floor.

All diving centres in Dominica are on the Caribbean side of the island. You can hire equipment from them but it is much cheaper if you bring your own. It is a small island so you don't have to restrict yourself to one dive operator and can check out the diving in the different areas.

Dominica's currency is the East Caribbean Dollar. You cannot fly directly to Dominica (unless you live in the West Indies). Instead you need to change in, for example, Barbados or Guadalupe. English is the official language.

The best time to dive Dominica is between February and May. High season is from mid-December to mid-April, although Dominica is much quieter than most of the other Caribbean islands. Hurricanes might happen in September and October. Sea temperature is between 26 and 28oC and you might see whales at any time.

In 2017 Dominica was hit by hurricane Maria. The island was very badly affected, with the majority of buildings being damaged. However, most of the hotels and guest houses have been repaired and are open.

East Carib Dive

East Carib Dive boat, copyright Harald Zahn Situated on the beach of Salisbury, in the middle of the West coast. Run since 2002 by Harald Zahn who speaks German and English, and his French wife Beatrice who speaks French, English, German, Italian and Spanish. They have two dive boats, one for close-in diving and one for visiting sites further afield like Scotts Head. Offer relaxed diving and an idyllically situated beach bar. The dive centre is on the beach, reached by a steep set of steps down from the road. Very friendly: Harald even let our four-year old go on the boat with us. The place to go if you want uncrowded diving from a palm-fringed setting.

"Based in Soufriere so very short boat rides out to dives. We have dived there on 3 holdays. Karen and team can't do enough to help and the team are all competent, and really pleasant. All the diving is excellent. The team are responsive to divers' wants and needs. We had our best ever dive here with Oscar - a night dive of magnificent sights and (safe) adventure! Best dive operator we've dived with - diving is varied and always interesting and no long boat rides to the sites. Karen Moise is the owner/manager and will make every effort to meet all your needs - car hire, accommodation, recommendations, hikes/tours. Would and will dive there again - well organised, good value, great divemasters, small groups, packages, their own accommodation right by the sea, great location in the marine reserve"
