Galapagos Animals Escape Oil Slick The creatures of the Galapagos have largely managed to escape contamination from the wrecked oil tanker "Jessica". However, the search is continuing for stricken animals, and pelicans, giant tortoises, seal pups and blue-footed boobies have all been found which need cleaning. Galapagos National Park Director Eliecer Cruz forecast the islands' ecosystem would make a full recovery within 3 to 4 years. The ecological damage was reduced because currents took most of the oil away from the islands. [Reuters] Adopt a Wreck Archeologists know very little about many of the wrecks that are regularly dived by recreational divers. Even the precise location of the wreck is often unknown to them. The Nautical Archeology Society has therefore started a UK "Adopt a Wreck" scheme. Clubs or individuals nominate a wreck that they regularly dive, and gather information about the wreck structure and its wildlife. For more information on how to adopt a wreck see: http://www.naportsmouth.org.uk/purpose/divingpurpose.htm Free Software to Record Underwater Objects and Contours Divers can now log the exact position of objects in the water underneath their boat. Briefly, you need a GPS receiver, a sonar, an old laptop and a plastic box to keep everything dry. The good news is that the software you need is now free! For more details see http://www.windmill.co.uk/gps.html Amnesty for Finds from Wrecks in UK Waters British law requires all items you take from a wreck to be reported to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. You may be able to keep what you lift, but they need to know if it is dangerous, historically significant or should be returned to its owner. The penalty for not reporting finds is normally a fine of 2500 pounds (around 3700 US dollars or 3900 Euros), with the possibility of prosecution. However, this year from 23 January until 24 April, an amnesty is in place to encourage you to report past finds. Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and the Isle of Man are also operating a similar scheme.
