What prompted you to write the book? My fascination for the creatures and a desire to tell people their stories. I also wanted to use the photographic material I had accumulated, some of which I think is unique in terms of animal behaviour. What distinguishes your book from other sea life guides? It has many more photographs and descriptions that illustrate the animals' behaviour and lifestyles, rather than simply acting as aids to identification. Wherever possible, sequences or pairs of photographs show what the animals get up to in terms of hunting, breeding, camouflaging, etc. Favourite dive? A shallow sandy bay in Devon with pollack hunting sand-eels, cuttlefish courting and masses of time underwater. The Red Sea isn't too bad either. Where would you like to dive next? The Isle of Man or Norway. Worst Diving Experience? Live-aboard boat way off Cornwall, dusk, December, dry-suit off, everyone else in cabin out of ear-shot. Almost fell overboard while peeing over-stern. What a stupid way to go!! * Paul is a marine biologist and underwater photographer. In the last 20 years, he has dived all over the world. Photographic credits (besides Marine Animals of the South West) include the California chapter in New Holland's Top Dive Sites of the World, the National Marine Aquarium 1999 calendar - Beneath Plymouth Sound, and dozens of articles on marine life in dive publications * The second edition of Marine Animals of the South West features many fantastic new photographs, and is now available from Amazon.co.uk ___________________________________________________________ Diving News From Around the World ================================= This month we look at whales, electronic tagging and are our brains being damaged by small bubbles? Census of Marine Life Launched Scientists have launched a 10 year program to assess the distribution of species in the ocean. Due to begin 2002, animals selected for the first wave of monitoring include blue whales, bluefin tuna, northern elephant seal, blue sharks, albatrosses, leatherback turtles and yellowfin tuna. Thousands of these animals are to have electronic tagging devices attached. Not only will the animals’ movements be tracked, but temperature, salinity and physiological data will also be logged. What’s more, the data will be available in real-time over the Internet. Damage to Divers’ Brains Is subliminal damage done to divers’ brains by little bubbles? The answer, you’ll be pleased to know, is no. German research shows no evidence of brain injury in their study of divers having an average of 17 years experience. Lost Whales For 10 days a pod of five sperm whales has been trapped in the North Sea, seeking a way out. The whales have missed their normal migration route along the west coast of Scotland and Island to the Canary Islands. As a deep water species they would be very nervous of the busy Channel shipping lanes, and their best hope is to head North and start again. Action Plan for Cetacean Conservation The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and Dive magazine have launched an action plan to protect cetaceans which frequent European waters. The whales, dolphins and porpoises are being poisoned, killed in nets and harassed by speed boats. The plan focuses on modifying fishing nets so the cetaceans can avoid entanglement and drowning. It also aims to stop the oil industry using explosions in the animals’ home waters and to ban chemicals that accumulate in their body fat causing illness and infertility. __________________________________________________________ Free Amazon.co.uk Voucher ========================= If you have not yet made a purchase from Amazon.co.uk, we can send you a free money-off voucher.
