Does anyone know where the best divespots are situated? Any (PADI) divecenter recommended? Thanks Namaste http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=557 -- Mauritius Just come back from a superb diving holiday in Mexico and am so depressed about being back we've already started to plan for next year. The main idea so far seems to be to go to Mauritius but we've had no experience of the island(s) before. Anybody out there who's been and can suggest the best area to stay in for diving. Maps of the reefs around Mauritius appear to be non-existant on the internet. Marineboy http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=551 __________________________________________________________ Did You Know? Coral Reef Facts ============================== Some coral species are particularly aggressive combatants, capable of extruding their stomach tissue - known scientifically as mesenterial filaments - over adjacent colonies, literally digesting them alive. Other species might overgrow their competitor, or block access to vital resources such as light. Scientists recently discovered that corals also use this trick to defend themselves against algae that try to overgrow coral in their quest for light and space. -- From the Beautiful Oceans on-line course: Coral Reef Architecture and Organisms. To Exercise or Not to Excercise After a Dive? Current thinking is that strenuous exercise after diving increases the risk of decompression sickness. However, a new study suggests that exercise after a dive may actually reduce it. http://www.news.scubatravel.co.uk/ Humans wiping out coastal marine life, study shows Human exploitation of coastal waters and estuaries has wiped out 65% of their wetland and sea-grass habitats and depleted 90% of marine species, new research suggests. http://www.edie.net/news/news_story.asp?id=11649 More Damage to Reefs in Past 30 Years than in Previous 220000 The recent mass die-off of Caribbean coral reefs dramatically altered reef community structure. Scientists wondered about past stability before human disturbance began. They studied the fossil record of Barbados and found a stable coral community composition despite marked variability in sea level and climate. They concluded that recent human impacts have changed coral community structure in ways not observed in the preceding 220 000 years. http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/ Greenpeace Warns Drift Nets Threatening Mediterranean The environmental group Greenpeace has urged Mediterranean countries to crack down on drift net fishing, warning the illegal practice was threatening marine life. Drift nets, banned in Greece since 2002, drift with the current. The nets can be nine miles in length and 65 feet in depth. The United Nations banned drift nets in 1992. http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=10860 Whales Can Live to Nearly 200 About 5 percent of the bowhead whale population is over a hundred years old and in some cases 160 to 180 years old. Bowheads, also known as Greenland right whales, are baleen whales, meaning that instead of teeth they have bonelike plates that they use to strain food from gulps of water. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/ Marine parks failing to protect world's coral reefs Marine parks are failing to protect the world's coral reefs says a prominent New Zealand researcher. Many of the parks remain vulnerable to risks that arise from beyond their boundaries, such as sedimentation, pollution, coastal development. Nearly one-fifth of the world's coral reefs are included in 980 marine parks, but just one-tenth of a percent prohibit poaching. http://www.physorg.com/news70709936.html Scientists Seek to Spy on World's Fish Thousands of marine animals could be tracked under a $150 million project to understand threats to life in the oceans with technology perfected for supermarket checkouts. Tagging of marine life is now limited to regional projects. The scheme could give insights into wider ocean migrations and the impacts of overfishing or climate change, helping governments manage dwindling stocks. http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=10756 Ozone hole alters Antarctic sea life THE ozone hole over Antarctica could be having a bigger impact on life in the region than anyone realised. In clear summer skies, lower ozone levels allow significantly more UVB light to reach the ocean and damage DNA. http://www.newscientist.com/ __________________________________________________________ * Copyright SCUBA Travel - http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/ * Reprinting welcomed with this footer included.
