SCUBA News Bookshelf: Interviews with Authors
=============================================

This month Steve Barsky, author of many diving books, talks to
SCUBA Travel.

The first "book" I wrote was the Dry Suit Diving Manual. It was
the first book on dry suit diving and was well received, but was
poorly marketed (not by me). I had already been writing articles
for magazines, so writing a book wasn't really a big leap. It
just took more material. What kept me going was the creation of
my second book, Diving in High-Risk Environments, which has been
a very important book for commercial divers and people who work
in search and rescue.

My favourite dives have included shark dives in the Coral Sea,
the wreck of the Yongala off Australia, many dives at the Channel
Islands, Stingray City and the walls of Grand Cayman. Also, some
of my deep commercial dives stand out vividly in my memory.

My wife and I have always wanted to dive Truk and Palau.
Hopefully, we'll get there in the next few years.

My worst diving experience was on a working dive in the North
Sea. I was diving surface supplied gear and my hose became
wrapped up in the platform. I couldn't get it free and the
weather was building rapidly. The hot water supply to my suit got
disconnected and I couldn't get it hooked back up. I really
thought I was going to die!

I am working on two books right now for Scuba Diving
International, one a radical approach to nitrox diving and
another a fresh look at underwater navigation. These books will
be quite unique. I'm also working on another book for our
company, Hammerhead Press, but it's confidential. I could tell
you, but then I'd have to kill you...

Steve started diving in 1965 and was certified as a diving
instructor in 1970. He trained as a commercial diver between 1974
and 1976. He has since worked as a diver in the North Sea and the
Gulf of Mexico, before moving to first Diving Systems
International then Viking Dry Suits. In 1989 he started his
consulting company - Marine Marketing and Consulting. Last year
he launched the publishing company Hammerhead Press.

Diving News From Around the World
=================================
This month: a sovereignty battle for underwater volcano, marine
conservation and the discovery of a 1500 year old shipwreck.

Sicilians Stake Claim on Underwater Volcano
Sicilian divers will this week try to plant a flag on an
underwater volcano, to prevent any claims of British sovereignty.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics has suggested that
the volcano, now 6 metres (20 feet) below the surface, may
resurface soon. The last time it appeared was in 1831, when the
British navy planted the Union flag and claimed it for Britain.
The King of Naples sent a warship to replace the flag, and a
French party also landed. Conflict was avoided by the island
  sinking again.

Conserving Horseshoe Crabs
On the East coast of America, horseshoe crabs are used as bait by
commercial fishermen. More interestingly, their blood is used to
detect toxin in implantable medical devices. The crabs are not
killed for this, but caught, bled and returned to the sea. The
numbers of horseshoe crabs, though, are rapidly declining and an
annual harvest limit has been imposed.

Clinton Protects Sensitive Sea life
President Clinton has reauthorized the National Marine
Sanctuaries Act for five years. This law protects 13 sites around
the country, including Florida's coral reefs, giant kelp forests
off California and nursing grounds for Hawaii's humpback whales.

1500 Year Old Wreck Discovered
An almost perfectly preserved 1500-year old shipwreck has been
discovered in the Black Sea off the coast of Turkey. A team led
by Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic, used diving robots
to view the wreck. The ship is about 300 metres (1000 feet) down
and is in such good condition as it lies in anaerobic conditions
