Originally from Europe, the mussels colonise in such vast numbers that their weight can collapse some of the more fragile shipwrecks. They also create an environment where sulphur-reducing bacteria flourish and cause iron to break down. For the full story see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A142-2000Aug21.html For more details on Zebra mussels see http://www.science.wayne.edu/~jram/zminter2.htm Scottish Wrecks Investigated A team of maritime researchers from St Andrews University are investigating shipwrecks around Scotland, to fill the gaps in Scottish maritime knowledge. http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/archive/2-8-1900-23-46-2.htm Colourful Coral Reef Fish Why are coral reef fish colourful rather than camouflaged? Justin Marshall, from the University of Queensland, has designed an underwater spectrophotometer to let him view things as fish do. Marshall has discovered that the fish may see hardly any contrast between the blue of many species, such as angelfish or surgeonfish, and the colour of the water around the reef. More surprisingly, says Marshall, a yellow fish is well camouflaged against the reef. He took just 1 minute 39 seconds to complete 2 lengths of the 60 yard (55 metre) trench. _________________________________________________________________ SCUBA News Bookshelf ==================== August's book of the month is The Rapture of the Deep by Michael G Zinsley Review: A collection of stories, all with a diving backdrop, from 16 different countries. Michael Zinsley writes entertainingly about the places he has visited and worked as a diving instructor. Easy-to-read: the book features local customs, dive clients from hell, historical snippets and sea-life notes. And the underwater passages, which are so difficult to do well, make you want to book your flight and get back in the water. Zinsley relates anecdotes from Antigua, Australia, Bermuda, Bonaire, California, Fiji, Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Palau, Philippines, Ponape, Saint Lucia, Thailand, Tonga, Truk, the US Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Western Samoa and Yap. If you are looking for some light-reading to take on your travels, look no further. Even if you're not visiting one of the countries featured it'll enthuse you with ideas of where to go next, or, perhaps more importantly, where to avoid. It's very obvious though, that the book is written by an American. Some of the vocabulary, like gotten and critter, jarred slightly on non-US ears, and of course it's "your shout" if everyone else has bought a round except for you! SCUBA Travel readers can obtain signed copies of the book by posting a $21 cheque (or $20 check if in North America) and return address to the author at: 1616 Kanola Road, La Habra Heights, CA 90631-8215, USA. This includes sales tax, shipping, etc. The book is also available from Amazon. + This book is available from Amazon.co.uk + and from Amazon.com + If you want to recommend a diving-related book please e-mail news@scubatravel.co.uk _________________________________________________________________ * Copyright SCUBA Travel - http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/ * Reprinting welcomed with this footer included.
