Creature of the Month: Moray Eel - MURAENIDAE
===================================================

Most divers enjoy seeing a moray eel underwater. The
biggest of this diverse group of fish, the giant moray
(Gymnothorax javanicus), grows to 3 m. Although not
normally agressive to divers, it can cause serious injury
if provoked.

Like other eels, morays have long bodies usually
lacking scales. They generally have one continuous fin
along their backs. A giveaway that the eel is a moray is
its two elongated nostrils.

Morays live in holes and generally hunt by night, locating
their prey by their excellent sense of smell. Moving with
snake-like motions, they are extremely quick with long
sharp teeth. When at rest you may see them rhythmically
opening and closing their mouths. They do this to maintain
a respiratory current past the gills. Morays eat fish,
crustaceans and octopus. Larger Octopus, however, will
also feed on morays.

The eels are found throughout the tropics, in the
Mediterranean and Warm Atlantic. They range from near
the surface to deep water.

moray eels, we recommend Coral Reef Fishes (Collins
Pocket Guides). Read our review at

80% DECLINE IN CARIBBEAN CORAL REEFS
Researchers have found that coral coverage in some
parts of the Caribbean has declined by about 80 percent,
a loss that may take many decades to recover. Studies
of ancient coral deposits suggest that the recent loss
of coral cover is unprecedented within the past few
millennia. The scientists suggest coral is being killed
by disease, storms, overfishing, pollution and habitat
  destruction.
