Travel Warning Update
=====================
In the wake of the Bali bombing, governments are advising
people not to travel to Indonesia. As well as warnings,
though, their web sites often provide other useful
information on countries which you are planning to visit.
For example, the British Foreign Office says this
(amongst other things) about Thailand.
"Following the terrorist attacks in Bali on 12 October
in which Western tourists were deliberately targeted,
the threat to British nationals in Thailand, including
popular tourist areas, the island of Phuket in particular,
has increased significantly. British nationals should
exercise extreme caution in public places, in particular
places of entertainment such as nightclubs, bars,
restaurants and places of worship known to be frequented
by foreigners...Visitors who take part in water sports
and scuba diving in Thailand should be aware that
standards maintained by diving schools and rescue services
are not always as high and comprehensive as they might be
in the UK. Some dive shops are affiliated to major
international training organisations and they are likely
to run a better operation and meet strict standards. It
is advisable to thoroughly check a dive operator's
credentials before contracting to any particular
one...Jellyfish are common to Thai coastal waters and
can sometimes be found swimming close to the shore,
particularly during the rainy season (May to October).
A jellyfish sting can be fatal. Care should be taken
when swimming in the sea. If in doubt local advice,
eg from hotel management, dive shops, should be
sought and followed."

If you are still intending to visit Bali, in spite of the
warnings, there are some good deals to be had when
booking hotels. For example, one website is letting you
name the price you are willing to pay for a room.

carrying fuel oil - a dirtier and more toxic substance
than crude oil - shouldn't have been in heavy winter
seas near Spain at all.

PROTECTED WHALES RECOVERING
Southern Right Whales have increased in number off the
South African coast. Found in the southern hemisphere,
they faced extinction in the 1930s due to large-scale
whaling. In fact, they got their name because they were
considered the "right" whale to hunt as they moved
slowly and obligingly floated to the surface when
killed by harpoons.
