Contact the Editor for yours now. _________________________________________________________ Diving News From Around the World ================================= FREE-DIVING RECORD SET Frenchman Loic Leferme set a new free-diving world record last Sunday in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice. He dived to 162 m in 3 minutes and 36 seconds. The previous record was 160 m, held by Tanya Streeter. An earlier attempt this month to beat the IAF record ended tragically when Audrey Mestre died on her ascent to the surface. FBI BACK DOWN OVER DIVER INFORMATION DEMANDS A Beverly Hills scuba diving store has resisted a federal grand jury subpoena demanding that they identify everyone who had taken, but not finished, recreational dive classes over the last three years. The subpoena was based upon far-fetched fears that an underwaster terrorist attack could be accomplished by partially-trained divers. Apparently the FBI has already obtained information about every certified diver in the United States through the certification organisations PADI, NAUI, and SSI. http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Surveillance/20021021_eff_pr.html DIVERS ACCUSED OF MURDER Two Czechs are accused of murdering a companion at sea, hiding his body in a cave and attempting to make it look like a diving accident. The two men say the dead man became trapped while diving and stabbed himself to shorten his suffering. http://www.praguepost.com/P03/2002/Art/1016/news4.php MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY CONFERENCE The Marine Conservation Society Annual Conference is being held at the Royal Museum, Edinburgh on Saturday 26th October 2002. The conference is open to anyone, not just MCS members. Measures to protect New Zealand's critically endangered
North Island Hector's dolphin have been delayed. The
dolphins are threatened by set net fishing, which has
severly depleted the population in the past few decades.
The rate of death is unsustainable for the world's
rarest marine dolphin.
