Your Letters
============

We have heard that the diving in Cuba is magnificant but
very expensive and difficult to organise. We can find
very little reliable information on the web. Has anyone
  any first hand advice ?

A low-cost procedure for automatic seafloor mapping,
with particular reference to coral reef conservation in
developing nations, has been described in a recent paper
published in Hydrobiologia (and co-authored by the
  SCUBA News Editor) - Hydrobiologia 474 (1-3): 67-69,
  April 2002

SUUNTO DIVE COMPUTERS RECALLED

EU TO BAN SHARK FINNING
New European Union legislation is to ban all shark
finning in EU waters and by EU registered vessels
worldwide. The result of demand for shark fins for
soup, finning, tcauses the death of tens of millions
of sharks. The result in many areas has been a
downward spiral of reduced shark populations.

PROTECTING THE GALAPAGOS, AND SHARKS OUTSIDE THE EU
We've previously told of campaigns against shark
finning (SCUBA News 14), and how illegal fishing in
the Galapagos was killing dolphins (SCUBA News 26).
An American environmental organisation now has
on-line petitions against these operations, to be
presented to the Ecuadorian President Gustavo Noboa and
the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi
Annan. To add your name visit
  http://www.wildaid.org/programs/epet_signup.htm

BASKING SHARK PETITION
Another petition, this time to secure CITES listing
for the Basking shark, is being organised by the
  Shark Trust. To sign visit

SALTY SEA SPRAY CURES POLLUTION
Researchers have found being that sea spray helps wash
pollution from the air. Water droplets in polluted clouds
are so small they normally remain suspended, but a team
from the Hebrew University found the sea salt particles
latched onto them and triggered rainfall to cleanse the air.
