Diving News From Around the World
=================================

WEATHER ROBOTS RELEASED ON OCEANS
Within the next four years, 3000 free-floating robots
will be deployed in seas around the world. Already,
347 robots, each 1.5 m (5') tall, gather and transmit
climate data. Almost all are in the northern hemisphere.
Now the focus is switching south. It's hoped that the
thousands of these data acquisition devices will
greatly improve the accuracy of weather forecasting,
including major events like El Nino.

OIL EXPLORATION OFF BARRIER REEF
The Australian public has until the 3rd of May to
comment on draft environmental guidelines for oil
exploration off the Great Barrier Reef. The opposition
says oil exploration is a precursor to mining and
should not be tolerated near the reef.

LARGEST OCTOPUS EVER
A giant octopus of over 4 metres (13') has been
dredged up from near New Zealand's remote Chatham
Islands. Scientists believe it is the largest
octopus ever discovered. Caught at more than 900 m
(3000'), the octopus has been identified as Haliphron
Atlanticus, a bright red, jelly-like species of
octopus not previously found in the South Pacific.

WWF JAPAN FOR PARTIAL LIFTING OF WHALING BAN
The World Wide Fund for Nature Japan supports a
partial lifting of the international ban on
commercial whaling, on condition that all catches
are closely monitored. The proposal could help
Japan's campaign to get the ban lifted. Other
environmental groups remain opposed to whaling.
