What's New at the SCUBA Travel Web Site?
========================================

New Cave Diving Section
Following our caving photo gallery last month, today
we're launching a section devoted to cave diving. See
below for a taster, or visit

Diving in Saudi Arabia
We've added more dive operators to our Saudi Arabia
  section.

Diving in Madagascar
We now have an extensive list of dive operators in
Madagascar, courtesy the Madagascar Consulate. The
reputedly good diving here makes it a place to consider
  when the political situation stabilises.
  Diving in Ireland
There are hundreds of dive sites off the west coast of
Ireland. We now have descriptions of some, courtesy
  Andy Miller.

Tea and Medals: Cave Diving in France
=====================================

The Dordogne/Lot area is one of the greatest cave diving
areas in the world. The three rivers, Dordogne, Lot and
Céle in the central, southern region of France offer over
a dozen classic cave dives including some of the longest
and deepest "siphons" in the country, if not Europe. These
are big, "friendly", clear-water passages:
"If you can't get twin 15s and a 'Zepp' down then it is,
    by definition, too tight".

Summer water conditions in the caves are a comfortable
15 degrees centigrade (59 oF) and vis can be gin-clear,
especially around the end of August/September. Many sumps
here have navigation lines for 100s of metres and can be
accessed almost from the roadside. Summer air temperatures
can be in the 30s (80s): perfect for the après-dive
"tea and medals" on the terrace of a local cafe.

The Dordogne region has been at the forefront of European
cave diving developments and exploration for decades. The
depths of Emergence du Russel, for example, were plumbed in
the seventies to more than 70 m (230 ft). Toe-curling epic
dives have been executed using innovations such as half a
dozen 'jumbo rigged' 20 litre cylinders, twin re-breather
gear and doubled-up underwater scooters. People have
successfully penetrated thousands of metres into these
systems, reaching amazing depths of 80 m (262 ft) during
dives that have lasted several hours. Some of these
adventures are testament to the teamwork of dedicated
diving groups whilst others are the achievements of
rugged individuals.

DIVERS RAISE MONEY FOR DOLPHIN AMBULANCE
British Divers Marine Life Rescue Group is collecting

DISAPPEARANCE OF DUGONG SIGNALS DEGRADATION OF COAST, SAYS UN
The rare Dugong or sea cow is thought to be the source of
sailors tales of mermaids. This peaceful mammal, though,
has now gone from many of its habitats in the Indian
Ocean and South China Sea. This month a UN agency told
the world's environment ministers that this loss
signalled the serious despoilment of coastal
  environments, and called for action.

UNSPOILED VIRGIN ISLANDS' CORAL REEFS THREATENED
The 360 acres surrounding Botany Bay on the western end
of St. Thomas island has some of the healthiest coral
reefs of the island. However, these are now threatened

  80 time-share apartments and 55 condominiums. The
Environmental Association of St. Thomas are vigorously
  campaigning against the development.

MORE BARRIER REEF BLUES
With abnormally high water temperatures in the Coral Sea,
a huge pool of hot water may drift back over the barrier

rising this month, half the reef could die.
