I am thinking about writing a book about history of SCUBA. I intend to start from approximately 500 BC. I want the book concise, focusing on SCUBA diving. I will mention wars (for example Greek divers attacked ships in Syracuse), if necessary, to make the book a little bit more interesting. Before doing a research and getting information for my work, I wonder if this book would fulfil a demand, if there is any! If you put some insight to this question, I really appreciate it. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Cem Timurkan scuba@maryland.com Editor: If you're interested in such a book, please contact Cem directly at scuba@maryland.com * Dear SCUBA News I will be going to Dive Lake Baikal next year and am interested on any diving tips and reports Andy Editor: We haven't any information on Lake Baikal, but perhaps you have? Contact the Editor and I'll pass your messages on. ::ADV_____________________________________________________ : : Drive more targeted customers to your web site with : Overture. Police said Mayol hanged himself. Born in 1927, in 1976 he broke the 100 m barrier with a dive to 101 m off Elba. He retired from competitive free-diving in 1983 after a last dive to 105 m at the age of 56. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/europe/ MP CALLS FOR HALT TO DOROTHEA DIVING The MP for Caernarfon has called for an immediate stop to diving in Dorothea Quarry in north Wales, after two divers died there in two days. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/wales/newsid_1718000/1718496.stm LONDON INTERNATIONAL DIVE SHOW 2-3 March 2002 Book your tickets before 25 February and save £2.50.http://www.nature.com/nsu/020107/020107-12.html http://www.diveshows.co.uk/ ARCTIC DIVE HOLIDAY Ultra Travel, a Moscow-based company, are offering divers a chance to dive under the ice at the North Pole. http://www.portal.telegraph.co.uk/travel/ http://www.ultra-travel.ru/north3_eng.htm DIVER JAILED FOR LOBSTER POACHING A diver in San Diego, California, has been sentenced to 6 months in jail after being caught poaching lobsters for the second time. It is believed to be the first time that anyone has been imprisoned for the offence in the US. http://www.uniontrib.com/news/metro/ ISRAEL PLANS TO POLLUTE MEDITERRANEAN SEA Environmental groups criticised Israel's plan to dump treated wastewater from factories into the Med. As part of a plan to clean up the polluted river Kishon, a pipe is to be built that will bypass the river and allow the factories to discharge waste directly into the sea. The drive to improve the Kishon began in 2000 when it was revealed that 40 navy divers had contracted cancer after carrying out diving exercises in the river. http://enn.com/news/wire-stories/2002/01/01022002/ SEALS COULD SAVE THEMSELVES WITH CAMERAS Small infrared cameras, together with sensors recording depth, speed and bearings, have been attached to Antarctic seals. The system monitors a seal's dives to find food and shows which fish they are eating. It's hoped to use the technology to examine whether rising numbers of seals in British waters are eroding the salmon population: a claim which has led to calls for seal culling. Fuiman, L.A., et al. Marine Biology, DOI 10.1007/s00227-001-0752-y, (2002). http://www.nature.com/nsu/020114/020114-12.html ::ADV_____________________________________________________ : : Log data from GPS and sonar to your spreadsheet, : database or mapping program with the free Windmill : software. It also outlaws the use of spearguns and certain kinds of traps. Measures which should increase the sea life around the Caymans http://enn.com/news/wire-stories/2002/01/01162002/ NEW SPECIES OF SQUID FOUND A new 6 metre (20 foot) squid has been discovered 2000 m (6500 feet) down. The squid seen may be big, but they are probably only a year or two old. Squid grow rapidly - giant specimens can gain 40 kilogrammes in a year - before breeding once and dying. Vecchione, M. et al. Science, 294, 2505-2506, (2001). http://www.nature.com/nsu/011227/011227-3.html GREAT WHITE SHARKS FOUND TO MIGRATE VAST DISTANCE The largest predator in the sea, the great white shark, has been tracked by satellite and found to travel across vast stretches of open ocean. Previously thought to spend most of their lives close to shore, the results shocked the research scientists. The scientists had attached electronic tags to the sharks which recorded water depth, temperature and light every two minutes. http://www.portal.telegraph.co.uk/connected/ NAVY SONAR HARMS WHALES US Navy sonar tests likely caused 16 whales to beach themselves in the Bahamas last year. Six whales died, the others were pushed back into the sea. Each of the whales had haemorrhaged near its ears. The wounds would not be fatal but could have led the animals to become disoriented and swim on shore. http://enn.com/news/wire-stories/2001/12/12242001/ JAPAN TO BUILD NEW HELIPORT ON OKINAWAN REEF Overriding opposition from environmentalists, the Japanese government has decided to locate a U.S. Marine heliport over a reef off the island of Okinawa. Environmentalists say reclaiming land over a reef would damage the marine ecosystem. http://enn.com/news/wire-stories/2001/12/12272001/ SEAWEED DEFEATS BACTERIA A substance derived from compounds that an Australian seaweed uses to stop its fronds being besieged by bacteria, may make bacteria more vulnerable to antibiotics. The first application might be to prevent biofilms forming, perhaps by coating surgical implants before use. Henzer, M. et al.
