Simply type the depth in metres and press the Convert button to find the depth in feet. http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/baja/bajadive.html http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/redsea/reddive.html http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/thailand/thaidive.html Finally, we've an article about learning to dive on a PADI fastrack course in the Red Sea. It tells you what to expect when you're there, and what to make sure you know before you leave home.(After this report was written, and our novice returned home, the trainee instructor mentioned was abandoned on Ras Mohammed when his diving boat left without him. He subsequently quit the course and the person responsible was sacked.) http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/padi.html _________________________________________________________________ Diving News From Around the World ================================= Search for Nazi Loot Lake Toplitz, in the Austrian Alps, has long been rumoured to contain priceless treasures hidden by Nazi soldiers during the war. A US-led diving team is now searching the lake. The water is devoid of oxygen below around 20 metres (65 feet), so items left there should neither rot nor rust. The first phase of the expedition is to sketch the exact landscape of the lake's bed using a remotely operated vehicle equipped with video and sonar equipment. http://reuters.com/ Lost City Discovered Underwater archaeologists working off the Egyptian coast have discovered an entire submerged city, the ancient Herakleion. Historians always knew of its existence but until now no one had seen the evidence. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/ Seahorses Threatened by Over-Fishing Seahorses are being wiped out by over-fishing and the destruction of their habitat. Project Seahorse, however, is working to raise global awareness of the threat to the species and discourage their use as souvenirs and home aquarium curiosities. "We are trying to develop conservation measures that will ensure that seahorses will be here for years to come in a whole range of ways". By developing breeding programs and setting up sanctuaries in the wild the project hopes to slow the decline in seahorse populations. http://www.abcnews.go.com/ (One place where you might be lucky enough to see a seahorse on your dive is Thailand's Andaman sea, now featured in our Thailand section http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/thailand/) _________________________________________________________________ SCUBA News Bookshelf ==================== June's book of the month is Coral Reef Fishes: Indo-Pacific & Caribbean by Ewald Lieske, Robert Myers Review: An excellent, compact, guide to over 2000 species of fish you're likely to see whilst diving on coral reefs. Each fish is illustrated in colour, with pointers to key distinguishing marks. Brief text covers where you are likely to spot the fish, and describes its habitat and lifestyle. You're further helped with identification by the book's diagnostic notes on the fish's family (wrasse family, angelfish family, etc). An extremely useful book that manages to pack tons of information into a small, easily carried, volume. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to identify fish in the Caribbean, Red Sea, Andaman Sea, Pacific and Indian Oceans. + This book is available from Amazon.co.uk + and from Amazon.com + Read the April and May reviews: The Diving Guide to Red Sea Wrecks Dive Thailand + If you want to review a diving-related book please e-mail news@scubatravel.co.uk _________________________________________________________________ Top Ten Dives ============= Thanks to everyone who sent us details of their favourite dives for our Top Ten Dives feature - please continue to do so by filling in this form on our web site. http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/topdives.html _________________________________________________________________ * Copyright SCUBA Travel Ltd - http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/ * Reprinting welcomed with this footer included.
