Ocean Facts: The Difference between an Ocean and a Sea
==========================================================

A sea is part of an ocean that is partially enclosed by land. For example, the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas are part of the Atlantic Ocean, and the South China Sea part of the Pacific Ocean.

A simple explanation but there are exceptions. For example the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic Ocean is defined by ocean currents rather than by land. (It is bounded on the West by the Gulf Stream, on the North by the North Atlantic Current, on the East by the Canary current and on the South by the North Atlantic Equatorial current.)

What constitutes an ocean? One definition is that an ocean is formed by continental plates moving apart. By this definition the Red Sea is the world's youngest ocean. It is widening at just over a centimetre a year.

Although the Red Sea may one day become an ocean, it is not generally considered to be one yet. For diving we think of five oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Antarctic.

Diving News From Around the World
=================================

A plethora of whale stories this month.

If you would like display this news on your web site then go to http://www.scubatravel.co.uk/newsfeed.html to find out how. It's free and automatically updates your web page with the latest diving news.

Western Australia to Protect Whales with Marine Park

The state government of Western Australia is creating a marine park to protect and manage a key nursery of the world's largest humpback whale population. The marine park is to be at Camden Sound, about 400km north of Broome.

Blue Whales drowned out by seismic surveys

The intense noise produced by seismic surveys affects Blue Whales, making them call much more frequently.

Albatrosses feed with Killer Whales

Scientists have recorded the first observations of how albatrosses feed alongside marine mammals at sea. A miniature digital camera was attached to the backs of four black-browed albatrosses. The still images recorded from the cameras show that albatrosses associate with killer whales in the same way as tropical seabirds often do with tuna. In both cases the prey (usually fish) are directed to the surface and then it's easy hunting for the birds.

Free instructor training: BSAC Snorkelling

If you are a member of the British Sub-Aqua Club you can now train as a snorkelling instructor or snorkelling instructor trainer for free.

Coral Reefs Worth a Fortune

According to economists, a hectare of coral reef generates an average of US $130,000. They reach this conclusion by adding up such things as tourism, recreation, moderation of extreme events, food, and climate regulation. To divers though, coral reefs are priceless.

Coral bleaching increases chances of coral disease

Mass coral bleaching has devastated coral colonies around the world for almost thirty years. Now scientists have found that bleaching can make corals more susceptible to disease and, in turn, coral disease can exacerbate the negative effects of bleaching. A paper in the October issue of the journal Ecology shows that when they occur together, this combination of afflictions causes greater harm to corals than either does on its own.

Ocean observatories give new marine view

Planned ocean observatories will give people a never-before-seen view of the world's oceans.

Warmer climate not the cause of oxygen deficiency in the Baltic Sea

Oxygen deficiency in the Baltic Sea has never been greater than it is now. But it is not an effect of climate change but rather of increased inputs of nutrients and fertilisers. This is the finding of researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, who have analysed the ocean climate of the Baltic Sea since the 16th century.
