Diving News From Around the World
=================================

Royal Oak still poses Threat
In Issue 6 of SCUBA News (ISSN 1476-8011) we highlighted environmental
problems posed by oil leaks from HMS Royal Oak, torpedoed
in 1939 in Scapa Flow. Up to one and a half tonnes of oil
escapes from its fuel bunkers every week. This month Navy
divers will, for the first time, begin drilling into the
hull and begin to pump out the oil. Previously engineers
have tried many methods to halt the oil leakage without
penetrating the hull where hundreds of bodies have lain
  undisturbed for over 60 years.

Reflective Fishing Nets Save Dolphins and Others
Around the world fishermen using gillnets are killing
dolphins, sea birds, turtles, whales, porpoises and
untargeted fish. The nets can be more than a one and a half
km (1 mile) long and 5 m (15 feet) deep. Underwater the
thin nylon is nearly invisible. A new net, however, has
been designed to reflect sound waves in ranges used by
  echo-locating animals like dolphins. A blue-tinted version
of the net has the added benefit of reducing the number of
sea birds caught. The net is currently being tested, with
excellent results, in Canada and Denmark.

Efforts to Save the Basking Shark
In recent years the population of basking sharks has been
rapidly decreasing. This 10 m (33 ft) long animal is the
world's second largest fish. It eats only plankton. They
are very vulnerable to overfishing, having a slow growth
rate, a long time to sexual maturity (around 12-20 years),
a long gestation period (1-3 years) and small litter sizes
(around 6 pups). Concerned at the plight of the sharks, the
British government has pledged research funding to assess
population structures and movements. The UK is also bidding
to place the basking shark on Appendix II on the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which
  meets in Chile next year.
