Diving Centres in Bali
12 July 2017
Bali is not only an island but also a province in Indonesia which includes the southerly islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. It lies between Java and Lombok.
In many places in Bali you can dive without a guide. Talking with the people at dive shops or looking at dive guide books will give more than enough information. However, some places with strong currents are recommended only with a guide who knows the area.
March through to October is the dry season with some of the best diving in Bali. Heavy rainfall in December and January can ruin visibility.
Bali has a hyperbaric chamber at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.
Bali's currency is the Indonesian Rupiah. You can exchange all major currencies in the south but it is not as easy to do so elsewhere in Bali. Banks and money-changers will only accept post-1997 US$ bills in pristine condition. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in south Bali and in all up-market hotels and shops. Some places take American Express. You may be charged an extra 3% when using a credit card.

"Really professional diving centre. Responded to emails quickly and very helpful. I found the team very safe (and I'm a bit obsessive) and equipment was in good condition! They had a nice balance of helping you with your kit and letting you check your equipment yourself. No skimping on the pre-dive checks and a good pre and post dive brief.
I used the discount code on this website and got the 10% off, free equipment hire and goody bag with no quibble. Cost wasn't the cheapest but wasn't bad and well worth the money! Highly recommend this dive company."

"I love all the staff at this company. They are so helpful and friendly when you contact them and their instructors are soo good. I have done snorkelling, then tried the introductory dives and have now done my open water certification. Can't wait to go back and do more."

"Really enjoyed diving with Manta Manta Diving, Bali. Their website was clear, easy to view and had lots of detail. Their communication was quick and accurate. The pick up was on time and the diving and guiding were fantastic. Can't recommend them highly enough. Good value for money. Everything was included in the price so no hidden fees or gear rental like some of the other operators.

"Amazing diving at Nusa Penida, Bali. At least 12 manta rays for nearly 1 hour. Pick up and drop off at our hotel and nice lunch on the boat. Speed boat took about 10 divers in total.

"Bali: super, great place for diving with multiple excellent dive sites. Especially liked Mimpi's at Tulamben.
Tulamben Dive Center
Matahari Tulamben Resort
Run by Emiko who has been in Tulamben, for nearly twenty years and was the first dive operator there. The dive shop is attached to the Paradise Palm Beach Bungalows
"We stayed at Paradise Palm Beach Bungalows in Tulamben and dived with the attached dive shop, Dive Paradise Tulamben. the resort is very pleasant, our bungalow was nice and clean and just a stone's throw from the beach. I remember that it looked like a piece of heaven after the long trip from Europe. The staff are nice and good humored: their restaurant is a nice place to stay between dives. Our dive guide, Gusti, was really ok. If interested in booking there, the manager Emiko can work up a package with dives and accommodation for a good rate. Rates are a good deal anyway: 28 US$ for a double room with breakfast, meals are very cheap like everywhere else in Bali. Dives rate are 40 US$ for two dives, including guide, tanks, weights and porters to the dive site. You can dive on your own too: 15 US$ for the first tank and 5 US$ each tank further. "
Daily diving trips to Tulamben Ship Wreck, Nusa Penida, Manta Point, Tepekong, Mimpang, Biaha, Blue Lagoon, Menjangan. PADI dive courses. German owned and operated.

"I did my Open Water with Ikandive, a diving club in Pagandbai. They were very professional, very fun to dive with, I felt they knew the sites very well and were able to show us around the best places with the most unusual fishes. Even at our level! I would fully recommend people to try them out !!! I am definitely going back there next year to pursue my diving career! They were terrific to me during my open water and made me discover the wonders of life under water in a fun and very proffesional way! an Absolute must.

"Brand new good equipment, friendly and very helpful staff (the owners as well as the divemasters). They take you out on small groups to very rich unspoiled dive sites. They organise a local meal on the boat and are very aware of pollution. Also in for a good laugh. They make you feel very welcome in the diveshop and on the island.
They also operate good accommodation with the sweet name: secret garden; which is true.
Their diveshop does treat you very personally. As a dive instructor I really loved that. Good for the experienced divers, but also very personal to the non experienced (and the non experienced become experienced very soon !)
When I am back in Indonesia, I will definitely visit them again! "

"I dove with World Diving on the island of Nusa Lembongan. The shop is well-run, with friendly staff. I particularly enjoyed diving with Komang, one of the DMs.
Most of the dives off Nusa Lembongan and the neighbouring islands are drift dives. The currents can be fierce at times. World Diving seemed to have a good stance on "safety first" while listening to what their customers want.
The one knock on the place is that it can be hard to get the DM to take you on three dives in a day if that's what you want. World Diving uses outrigger boats to get to the dive sites, and this normally takes an hour or so because the boats are pretty slow. "

"I fell in love with the reefs around Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, Bali from my first dive there. As a marine biologist I've had the opportunity to dive some amazing and unique places - but something was just perfect about the strong currents and healthy reefs around Lembongan. I loved the Dive site Blue Corner so much that I decided to start up a dive resort / research centre by that name on Lembongan Island. Blue Corner is now our ' house reef 'so I can dive it every day!"

"DiveLite in Candidasa is the greatest dive company I have ever used in over 30-years of diving experience. Their master knows the spots and times and local sights...including sunfish! Great lunches too! Unbelievably inexpensive! I will go with them again and again and again. Highly, highly recommended.

Offers the full range of PADI and SSI courses, from try dives to dive master level in German, English, Dutch, Bahasa Indonesia and other languages. Located inside the 4* Candi Beach Resort Spa, diving CANDIDASA offers daily trips to Bali's dive sites around Candidasa, Padang Bai, Amed, Tulamben, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.
"I stayed in Candidasa and dived with diving CANDIDASA a couple of days. It's been great fun! The team is super friendly and offers very individual service, no mass-production as some of the Sanur- and Padang Bai-based dive centres. The equipment is also brand new (although I used my private gear). They offer trips to about 40 dive sites, ranging from macro to currents and manta rays - what else would you want? :) I already plan to come back later this year and dive with them again. Maybe I'll see you there then? "

Come to ECO-DIVE first and experience the wonder of the "morning of the world".
Imagine learning to dive on the black sand slope of a volcano towering majestically over the reef or a night dive on the wreck of Liberty. Experiences not to be missed!
Come dive and relax in this undeveloped and unspoiled corner of paradise. "
John Huxley of ECO-DIVE
"The Balinese's east coast diving best knowledge by far.
We have been diving there with them for over 10 years.
"Established since 1994, safe diving, huge local knowledge, friendly staff, skilled instructors, "muck diving" keenest eyed divemasters, the most experienced dive center around east Bali."
"Nice place to stay, the divecenter staff is friendly, helpful and experienced, diving is interesting and safe, many spots are located in front of Eco Dive, nice slope, 2 walls, a nice drift dive as well, and the staff knows every critter worth seeing. I've been a customer for 9 years in a row!
Many dive centers in the area, not all of them open all year long. In Amed only 3 dive centers have a good knowledge of the East coast diving.
Given that prices are similar all around, the choice is Eco, in my opinion."
Max C. Cahn (Padi Master SDT,Cmas instructor L 2), 2009
"Safety first, simply the best.
Patrick Morera, 2009
"The very best place to dive East Bali is ECO~DIVE in Jemeluk Bay, Amed.
The Canadian owner, John, established since 1994 has a tremendous knowledge of the divesites and moreover of the culture and people there. His divecenter is involved in conservation projects, beach-cleaning, school renovation, etc...
He is a friend of Wally Siagan (Diving Bali) and has dicovered many new divesites during the 3 last years. This centre can organise dive tours all around Amed in uncrowded spots, but also in Tulamben and further in Gili Tepekong and Mimpang, near Candi Dasa. Safe diving***, as all divecenters in East Bali have no certified intructors and even divemasters.
Patrick Bunutan, 2008
"I usually use Eco-Dive Bali for renting cylinders and weights. Reasonable rates and decent people. The air is clean and the info top notch.
"I dove with ECO-Dive Bali which is situated near the Liberty wreck in the North of Bali. It was the most relaxed and fulfilling organisation i have ever seen. Ran by a Canadian with australian divemasters who know their skills and spots. Free accommodation and an inside of village-life with the local fisherman are just a few of the things I experienced. Small but professional are the keywords here. For me this was the best place to dive in Bali. I got the adress out of the Lonely Planet but this place really deserves more attention.

"I had a great experience with Christine, one of the owners of this dive shop and her helpful, friendly local Balinese staff. I was on a limited schedule and budget and Christine was very helpful and patient in planning dives that would work within those constraints. One of my favorite dives in Bali was an early morning dive I did with Amed Scuba at the Liberty. We were the first ones in the water and were able to see an enormous amount. Equipment, concern for safety, and thorough knowledge of marine life were all top-notch."
Nadav Kurtz, 2010
"Amed Scuba Dive Center in Amed (Bali) is an excellent dive center. I would certainly dive with them again. We booked a trip here for one week, to visit different divesites around bali and we also visited temples, waterpalaces etc. The divecenter is led by a german biologist (Christine Sbick) who speaks english very well. We payed 500
euro each for the week, including everything (hotel, equipment, dives, everything) except dinner. Christine takes care of you extremely well. She even put fruits, candybars, tea and coffee in our room! We had a very good time with her.
We stayed at different accommodations, because it was a roundtrip. The accommodations were very good. Also you can rent a room at Amed Scuba Dive Centre itself. Very good value for money. "
Marije, Netherlands 2010
"In July this year I took my first overseas trip .. destination Bali. My
ex-partner recommended that we take a diving experience with Nyoman who runs Amed Scuba Diving Center. I had never dived before and was extremely anxious. This anxiety was quickly alleviated by Nyoman with fun, laughter and so much knowledge of diving and the local area. He explained every detail in a way in which both the experienced and the novice could understand. I absolutely enjoyed my diving experience and so did my ex-partner who is an experienced diver. The fish, the coral and the diving areas that Nyoman took us to, were breathtaking and incredible. I gained memories that will not fade as we took in and shared the local area, culture and people with Nyoman. I really wanted to spread the word about Amed Scuba Dive Center. If a traveler would like to experience Bali Diving at its best, there really is no better place then to accomplish this then in the experienced hands of Nyoman. It would be so wonderful if so many other travelers could experience what myself and my ex-partner experienced."
Bali Dive Tours
"I have just completed my first land based 'dive safari' with Bali Dive Tours based in Amed,Bali. We did 4 dives a day for 6 days. There were no time limits on the dives and as the water was 28C+ we did a few dives of over 90 minutes. The diving is world class especially for macro and photography. But also the liberty wreck for big schools of fish and large fish.We paid 90 Euros a day for 4 dives.
We stayed in 3 different hotels all about 20 Euro for a double with breakfast in the 3 different locations. The hotels were basic and as we dived so much it was just a place to sleep. We were offered higher standard places but we were there to dive from dawn to night so it seems a waste to get a more expensive place. Shore dives-no boat dives. It is possible to boat dive sites for drift dives, but we wanted photo dives. Free pick up and drop off, A/C transport and private dive guides great value.
My first time with a private guide. It is fantastic, especially for photographers or macro/muck divers. I have paid more on other trips to have 20 divers on the boat and only 2 guides. Treat yourself to a 'safari' bali style."

"Having heard so much about diving Bali, I travelled out last year. Bali diving is the best that I have had so far, and by far. The vis was fanastic, the diving great, the coral reefs so beautiful and alive. My greatest memory was having my first Manta encounter, (16ft wing span) I will be returning to Bali many times, and will always recommend that all divers should visit Bali at least once in their lives. All at Blue Dive were great to work with, and helped make my trip out there so worth while.

"If you want to move around Bali for diving or just to look at specific attractions, at a reasonable price, look no further then Joan and Eelco. They planned the trip from pick up to drop off and the drivers they use are pleasant and friendly. This is one of the most enjoyable holidays I have had. Quiet, good food at a reasonably good price. Nothing much else around, which was fine by me. Only downside is to get to the location. Great customised holiday."

Dives range from a quiet, murky bay, guarded by an army of tiny spider crabs disguised as a meadow of seaweed to rich offshore pinnacles, wild with currents, swirling with great schools of fish and patrolled by sharks.

An excellent, comprehensive guide to reef fishes, which is small and light enough to pack regardless of amount of diving equipment. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to identify the fish they see whilst diving the tropics.
